Introduction
I initially said I wouldn’t provide any learning material. The main reason is, internet is full of high quality articles and blogs providing explanations on the German language in English. Furthermore, it’s just not my niche, and I want to focus on what I’m doing well already.
Prepositions seem to be an exception. There are a ton of explanations online, but I don’t find it well structured considering their importance and difficulty.
German prepositions are hard for many reasons. There are a lot of them, they do not translate well from other languages such as English, French or Spanish, and they are followed by various cases that can change depending on the context.
Another thing that makes German prepositions hard is their multiple functions across levels: at A1 and A2, you learn that auf is used in a local context for horizontal surfaces and open areas. What you are not necessarily taught at B1 and B2 levels — though you should be — are its additional usages: auf is used to indicate a language: “Der Film ist auf Deutsch”; to indicate a participation in an event: “Wir haben uns auf der Party kennengelernt”; to indicate a place in a ranking: “Sie steht mit ihrem Lied auf Platz eins der Charts”; and to indicate a manner or style: “Sie hat die Gäste auf elegante Weise empfangen”.
None of these functions of auf are useful to be taught at levels A1 when a student discovers the most basic prepositions. They are also not taught well later on at levels B1 and B2 despite their utility. There are articles online that provide all the functions of a particular preposition, which, despite their exhaustivity, aren’t as useful as they could be. Again, there is no use for a student at level A1 to be taught what preposition is used to indicate a place in a ranking, and there is no use for a student at B1 level to be taught the many exceptions as well as the poetic and legal functions of each prepositions — that can wait for levels C1 and C2.
This article aims at solving this particular problem. My goal is to provide most of the functions, from A1 to C1, of the following preposition: ab, an, auf, aus, bei, bis, für, gegen, hinter, in, mit, nach, neben, ohne, pro, seit, über, um, unter, von, vor, zu, zwischen. I say “most” because, while I strive for exhaustivity, my main goal is to make prepositions easier for students, which means I cannot go into too many exceptions.
This guide is a work-in-progress: I am sure that I am missing some functions, and that some functions can be moved up or down a level. As for Sievers Study Hall, I’m striving for simplicity and exhaustivity, so you will find some functions being duplicated compared to other learning material providers.
Prepositions’ functions are first split by level; functions split by preposition are available thereafter. I provide additional resources for those who want to read more on this topic.
